Question

How do most protists reproduce?

Open in App
Solution

Protists are a group of organisms that reproduce through both sexual and asexual modes of reproduction.

Asexual reproduction:

  1. Protists have the ability to reproduce using binary fission.
  2. In binary fission, an organism duplicates its genetic material, or deoxyribonucleic acid, and then divides into two parts known as cytokinesis.

The steps include:

  1. Duplication in which the genetic material, that is DNA duplicates into two.
  2. This follows the growth of cell segregation of DNA.
  3. Final splitting of cells.

Sexual reproduction:

  1. Sexually they produce using gametes.
  2. Sexually by a process involving cell fusion and zygote formation.
  3. The process is called syngamy or fertilization.

The steps include:

  1. Fusion of nuclei.
  2. Fusion of chromosomes
  3. Inclusion of cytoplasm to form new cells.
