Respiration in Osteichthyes:

  1. They comprise bony fishes having (bones instead of cartilages), and are one of the major and oldest species on earth.
  2. They obtain the dissolved oxygen in the water.
  3. The respiration takes place, through well-developed structures called gills.
  4. They are comprised of gill filaments, which provide a large surface area for the exchange of gases to take place.
  5. Lungfish and other osteichthyan species have the capability to respire through, developed lungs or vascularized swim bladders.
  6. Thus, majorly the respiration in Osteichthyes happens through the gills.
