Question

How do plants absorb water?

Open in App
Solution

Water absorption in plants:

There are two ways in which plants can absorb water.

Capillary action:

1. The water and nutrients get absorbed through the xylem.

2. Xylem is located just below the surface of the plant’s tissue.

3. The xylem tissue cells attract the water molecules from the soil upward.

4. By diffusion, the water is pulled and absorbed by the plants.

Transpiration:

1. During photosynthesis, water is evaporated from the surface of leaves by sunlight.

2. As a result, a vacuum is created in the xylem tubes.

3. It pulls the soil water upward to fill the gap.

4. The process is known as transpiration through which water absorption in plants occurs.
