Question

How do plants use water in photosynthesis?

Open in App
Solution

Photosynthesis: Photosynthetic plants are generally capable of capturing light energy and then converting it into chemical energy.

  1. Water is utilized during the light reaction of photosynthesis. The splitting of the water molecule by the action of light is termed photolysis.
  2. This results in the release of oxygen and proton towards the thylakoid lumen and helps in generating a proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane.
  3. Photosystem II located at the inner side of the thylakoid membrane lies in association with the water splitting complex.
