Question

How do protists reproduce?

Open in App
Solution

Protist :

  1. Any eukaryotic organism that is not an animal, plant, or fungus is referred to as a protist.
  2. Some protists use gametes to reproduce sexually, whereas others use binary fission to reproduce asexually.
  3. A good example of a species with extraordinarily complicated life cycles is Plasmodium falciparum, which has both sexual and asexual versions of the organism.
  4. The intricacies of how protists reproduce asexually and sexually are discussed here.

Asexual Procreation:

  1. Binary fission, in which one nucleus divides, multiple fission, in which many nuclei divide, and budding are the asexual reproduction methods used by protozoa.
  2. The organism copies its nucleus and divides to create new organisms during both types of fission.
  3. When an organism develops from the body of its parent, it is said to be budding.
  4. Amoeba, Euglena, Trypanosoma, and Plasmodium are a few examples of protists that can reproduce asexually.

Sexual Reproduction:

  1. Most protists are motile, or able to move, and many of them inhabit aquatic regions.
  2. Syngamy, the merging of two gametes during sexual reproduction, is actually the most prevalent sexual phenomenon among protists.
  3. For instance, many parasitic phyla, various flagellated organisms, and pseudopods all engage in syngamy (e.g., in Plasmodium, a malaria-causing organism).
