Question

How do viruses work in the body?

Open in App
Solution

Virus:

  1. A virus is a submicroscopic organism that can replicate only inside a living host cell.
  2. The ligands present in the virus interact with cognate host cell receptors and allows the virus to penetrate the host cell.
  3. They then hijack the host cell machinery to replicate their genome and make progeny virions.
  4. The newly made progeny viruses burst open the host cell and get released to infect neighbouring cells, thus killing the host cell.
  5. However, some viruses remain dormant for a long period of time inside the host cell.
