There are 46 chromosomes in each cell of the human body.
Two copies of each chromosome are present and therefore making 23 chromosome pairs among which 22 pairs are autosomes and 1 pair is a sex chromosome.
During gametogenesis, one copy of each chromosome is inherited from the male gamete(sperm) of the father, and another copy is inherited from the female gamete(ovum) of the mother. Both the gametes contain 23 chromosomes each.
They pair up at the time of fertilization and form an embryo that is diploid( 2X23 chromosomes).
