Question

How do you calculate human RER?

Open in App
Solution

Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER)

  1. Respiratory exchange rate (RER) is a measure of the amount of CO2 produced by the body and the amount of O2 used.
  2. When this measure is calculated at the cellular level, it is called the respiratory quotient (RQ).

How to calculate RER:

RER is calculated by dividing the ratio of CO2 to O2. This is done with a spirometer.

RER = body volume CO2 / O2 volume used

RER = volume (CO2 / O2)
