Question

How do you calculate phenotype frequency?

Open in App
Solution

Phenotype:

  1. Phenotype is the set of observable physical properties of an organism as a result of the interaction of genes and environmental factors.

Phenotypic frequency:

  1. The percentage of people in a population that have a particular physical trait or phenotype is known as phenotypic frequency.
  2. It is the ratio that shows how frequently a certain phenotype arises in a population over the period of a single generation.
  3. The ratio between the total number of times a specific phenotype appears in a population and the total number of individuals present can be used to compute relative phenotypic frequency.
  4. The comparison of various phenotypic frequencies can also be done using relative frequency.

Example:

  1. In a herd of cattle, there are 100 cattle, among them 70 are black and 30 are white.
  2. Then the phenotypic frequency for black cattle=NumberofblackcattlesTotalnumberofcattles70100i.e0.7
  3. And the phenotypic frequency for white cattle=NumberofwhitecattlesTotalnumberofcattles30100i.e0.3
