Question

How do you know if two genes are linked together?

Open in App
Solution

Genes linked:

  1. When two genes are found on the same chromosome, they are said to be linked.
  2. That means that alleles, or gene versions, that are already present on one chromosome will be inherited as a group more often than not.
  3. If and how closely two genes are linked, the recombination frequency can be calculated using data from genetic crosses.

Recombinant frequency:

  1. The frequency of recombination is not a direct measure of how physically separated genes are on chromosomes.
  2. It does, however, provide a rough estimate or approximation of physical distance.
  3. So, a pair of genes with a higher recombination frequency is likely to be farther apart, whereas a pair with a lower recombination frequency is likely to be closer together.
