Chromosomes:

  1. Chromosomes are thread-like structures carrying genetic information.
  2. It is found inside the nucleus
  3. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes - 22 pairs of autosomes and 1 pair of allosome (sex chromosome)

Ordering chromosomes:

  1. Karyotyping is the process of taking photographs of individual chromosomes and arranging in a standardized format to analyze.
  2. It can reveal structure changes and changes in chromosome number.
  3. In karyotyping of human chromosomes, autosomes are named from 1 to 22 in order of decreasing size
  4. Sex chromosome is kept at last, i.e. 23rd.
  5. Only exception is chromosome 21, which is the smallest autosome but kept before 22.
  6. Chromosome 1 is the largest chromosome with 2968 genes.
