Question

How does a cell wall burst?

Open in App
Solution

Cell lysis/Cytolysis:

  1. When an osmotic imbalance causes a cell to burst/lyse, this is known as cytolysis or osmotic lysis.
  2. When water enters the cell through diffusion across the cell membrane or through specialised membrane channels, aquaporins cause the cell volume to increase to the point where the cell membrane ruptures, resulting in cell lysis.
  3. Plasmolysis is the reversal of this process.
