How does the loss of species diversity affect an ecosystem?

Ecosystem:

  1. The interaction between all the biotic and abiotic components of a geographical area is termed ecosystem.
  2. The prime function of the ecosystem is the exchange of nutrients and energy between the biotic and abiotic components of nature with the help of a food chain or food web.

Species diversity:

  1. In a particular geographical area or community the total number of species that are found is termed species diversity.
  2. It includes both the diversity of flora and fauna of a particular area.

Effect of loss of biodiversity on the ecosystem:

  1. Loss of species diversity leads to a disturbed ecosystem.
  2. This makes the ecosystem quite less productive and unstable.
  3. It is said that an ecosystem with rich species diversity is more resilient, stable, and self-sustaining.
