Question

How does the sperm reach the egg in gymnosperms?

Open in App
Solution

Gymnosperms:

  1. Gymnosperms are plants in which the ovules are not enclosed by any ovary wall and remain exposed, both before and after fertilisation.
  2. These are non-flowering plants (they produce naked seeds).
  3. In these plants, cones (or strobili) are produced.
  4. Female gametophyte develops on female cones, which consists of ovule and egg.
  5. In male cones, male gametophyte develops in form of pollen sacs.
  6. Male gamete or sperm reaches the ovule through the air.
  7. A pollen tube is formed and male gametes reach the archegonia (female sex organs) by means of this.
