Question

How is cell division in normal tissues coordinated?

Open in App
Solution

Cell division coordination

  1. In normal tissues, cell division is coordinated with cell growth to maintain cell size.
  2. The same is generally true in tumours, although the mechanisms of cell size control in tumour cells have been explored in even less detail than in normal cells.
  3. In general, the growth of a tumour mass requires that increased rates of cell division be matched by an increase in the rate of cell growth.
  4. These coordinated increases in growth and division are thought to be achieved in tumours, as seen in normal tissues, with the fact that several mitogenic signalling pathways drive division as well as growth.
