Question

How is cell growth rate determined by the rate of protein synthesis?

Open in App
Solution

Determination of cell growth rate by the rate of protein synthesis:

  1. Many eukaryotic cells can adjust their growth rate in response to changes in various regulatory factors, including nutrient concentrations or environmental growth factors.
  2. Since cell growth is dependent on a remarkably complex series of metabolic processes, it is not surprising that growth factors have many different effects within the cell — from increased intake of raw materials to triggering these implants into proteins, membranes, and other macromolecules.
  3. The key factor in determining cell growth is the speed of protein synthesis, and for this reason, the protein-making process — particularly the ribosome — is central to all growth control mechanisms.
  4. For example, depending on the culture conditions, the protein content of Saccharomyces cerevisiae steady-state cultures ranges from 35% to 44% of all macromolecules.
