Solution

Pollination:

  1. The process of transfer of pollen grains from the anther of one plant to the stigma of another plant or the same plant is called pollination.
  2. Pollination in plants is of two types-
  • Cross-pollination: In this process, the pollen transfer takes place from the anther of one plant to the stigma of another plant, it takes place in unisexual plants.
  • Self-pollination: In this process, the pollen is transferred from the anther of one plant to the stigma of the same plant, it takes place in bisexual plants.

3. For pollination to take place by the cross-pollination method various pollinating agents are required, which might be biotic or abiotic agents.

4. Biotic agents include birds, insects, animals, etc.

5. Abiotic agents include wind, water, etc.

Pollination in water plants:

  1. Pollination in water takes place via various pollinating agents, water, wind, or insects.
  2. The pollen grains of the water plants are very light and they have a mucilaginous covering on them to give them protection from being wet.
  3. Flowers in these cases come above the water surface and get pollinated just like the land plants.
  4. Examples - Water hyacinth, Vallisneria, Hydrilla, Zostera, etc.
