Question

How lower turgor pressure can help preserve water?

Open in App
Solution

Turgor pressure:

  1. Turgor pressure is the water pressure inside plant cells that is maintained through osmosis.
  2. Water is stored in the vacuole, which pushes against the cell wall, causing pressure to build up on the cell membrane; this pressure is known as turgor pressure.
  3. Cells with a low water concentration have lower turgor pressure.
  4. Low turgor pressure will make cells shrink inwards (cell wall is silently flexible) which makes voids between the cells which is known as intracellular space.
  5. Lower turgor pressure indicates that cells have a low water concentration, therefore closing off the stomata can hence help in the preservation of water.
