Question

How many sperms are produced in spermatogenesis?

Open in App
Solution

Spermatogenesis:

  1. In the seminiferous tubules of the testis, haploid spermatozoa develop from germ cells through the process of spermatogenesis.
  2. The stem cells near the basement membrane of the tubules undergo mitotic division as the first step in this process.
  3. Spermatogenesis, a process of cell development, produces fertilizing sperm that eventually combine with an egg to form a zygote.
  4. Because they safeguard cell connections and provide male germ cells with the nutrients they need to proceed through mitosis and meiosis, Sertoli cells are crucial for healthy spermatogenesis.
  5. Each spermatogonial cell produces 512 sperms during the process of spermatogenesis.
  6. Each spermatogonium produces 128 primary spermatocytes after several rounds of mitosis (diploid).
  7. The first meiotic division of primary spermatocytes results in the production of 256 haploid secondary spermatocytes.
  8. To create 512 spermatids, the secondary spermatocytes go through a second meiotic division (haploid).
  9. To produce 512 sperms, spermatids go through spermiogenesis.
