How many steps are in glycolysis?

Open in App
Solution

Glycolysis:

  1. Glycolysis is the process of the breakdown of glucose in the presence of oxygen to convert it into pyruvate.
  2. It is a multi-step process catalyzed by different enzymes in the cytoplasm.
  3. It is known as the first step in the cellular respiration process occurring in all living organisms.
  4. It is divided into the preparatory phase (glucose to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate) and the pay-off phase (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate to pyruvate).
  5. The glycolysis process generates NADH and ATP molecules.
  6. Glycolysis consists of ten steps in which the glucose is partially oxidized to pyruvic acid.
