Solution

Cell wall:

  1. The cell wall encloses the plasma membrane and offers the cell tensile control and defence.
  2. A plant cell wall is organized into main chief layers - the primary cell wall, the secondary cell wall and sometimes the tertiary wall.
  3. The primary cell wall is thin, and elastic and contains cellulose, hemicellulose, pectic substances, lipids and proteins.
  4. The secondary wall also consists of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, but cellulose content is higher in the secondary wall.
  5. In gymnosperms wood, the innermost layer contains xylan and is called the tertiary wall.
  6. The tertiary wall develops on the inner surface of the secondary cell wall. It is relatively thin and is not found in all the cells.
