Thermoregulation:

The process by which the body maintains its internal temperature range for the proper functioning and metabolic activities to take place.

Based on maintaining temperature, organisms can be divided into two categories:

  1. Poikilotherms
  2. Homeotherms

Poikilotherms:

  1. Its body temperature varies considerably and such organisms are required to survive or adapt to the temperature stresses.
  2. These may include fish, reptiles, and amphibians.
  3. These are also known as cold-blooded animals.
  4. They usually hibernate in winters or aestivate in summers. Sometimes also observed basking under the sun like a lizard.

Homeotherms:

  1. These maintain their internal temperature irrespective of external temperature.
  2. These may include mammals and birds.
  3. These are also referred to as warm-blooded animals.
  4. Rabbit being a mammal is also a homeotherm and can regulate its temperature.
