Question

Is a sperm cell haploid or diploid?

Open in App
Solution

Sperm cell:

  1. The sperm cells of humans are haploid. Sperms cells are produced in reproductive organ testes.
  2. In haploid cells, only one set of chromosomes is found.
  3. In human cells, the total number of chromosomes is 46.
  4. These chromosomes are found in pairs. During spermatogenesis ( sperm formation) germ cells are divided by meiosis.
  5. Germ cells have 46 ( 23 pairs) chromosomes.
  6. During meiosis, a single germ cell is divided into four daughter cells.
  7. Each daughter cell has a half number of chromosomes (23).
  8. These daughter cells convert in sperms after differentiation.
  9. Thus, each sperm cell is haploid.
