Question

Is Amoeba holozoic?

Open in App
Solution

Holozoic nutrition:

  1. Holozoic nutrition is heterotrophic nutrition in which ingestion and internal processing of gaseous, liquids, or solid food particles take place.
  2. Every holozoic nutrition follows the process of ingestion of the food, digestion of the food, absorption of the nutrients, assimilation of nutrients, and egestion of the waste product.

Amoeba:

  1. Amoeba is a unicellular organism that can alter its shape, by extending and retracting some finger-like projections (pseudopodia).
  2. It undergoes holozoic nutrition because it ingests food from its surroundings.
  3. When it finds food particles nearby, it projects the pseudopodia around the food particles and draws them into the body along with some water in order to form a food vacuole.
  4. Then it absorbs the nutrients into the body and utilizes them for different metabolic activities. In the end, the waste material is thrown out of the body through diffusion.
  5. So, the Amoeba is a holozoic nutrition-showing organism.
