Question

Is an aerobic respiration amphibolic pathway or a catabolic pathway?

Open in App
Solution

Anabolic pathway:

An anabolic pathway is a pathway in which energy is needed to synthesize large molecules out of smaller molecules or atoms.

Catabolic pathway:

The catabolic pathway is the pathway in which energy is released by the breakdown of a larger molecule into smaller molecules.

Aerobic respiration:

  1. Aerobic respiration is the metabolic process by which organisms break down glucose in order to produce energy.
  2. It takes place inside the mitochondria of the cell.
  3. The aerobic respiratory pathway is appropriately known as an amphibolic pathway (containing both anabolic and catabolic reactions).
  4. It follows a catabolic pathway because during the process glucose gets broken down into carbon dioxide and water.
  5. It follows an anabolic pathway because during the process an energy-rich ATP molecule is produced.
  6. So, aerobic respiration can be called an amphibolic pathway.
