Question

Is ATP synthetase a protein?

Open in App
Solution

ATP synthetase:

  1. ATP synthetase is an enzyme that catalyzes the reaction of ATP synthesis.
  2. ATP ( adenosine triphosphate) is the energy source of the cell.
  3. ATP synthetase enzyme catalyzes the reaction of ATP formation from ADP and also the reverse of this reaction.
  4. In cristae in mitochondria, a knob-like structure is found.
  5. This is a phosphorylation complex that is called F0F1 ATP synthetase.
  6. This complex has two main components head part F1 and a basal part called F0.
  7. The head part is a peripheral membrane protein complex. It has a catalytic site for converting ADP into ATP and ATP into ADP.
  8. The basal part is an integral membrane protein complex. It contains many copies of 3 different types of polypeptides.
  9. This forms a membrane channel for protons.
  10. So, ATP synthetase is a protein.
