Is sickle cell pleiotropy?

Open in App
Solution

Sickle cell:

  1. Sickle cell anaemia is a hereditary condition in which the RBCs form a crescent shape and are ineffective in transporting oxygen.
  2. Pleiotropy can be seen in the case of sickle cell anaemia.
  3. Changes in one gene can cause changes in two or more phenotypic features, a phenomenon known as pleiotropy.
  4. A single point mutation in the HBB gene is the cause.
  5. The HBB gene mutation prevents the synthesis of haemoglobin subunits, which results in impaired oxygen carrying ability.
  6. The effects of sickle cell anaemia include high blood pressure, eyesight loss, organ damage, and strokes.
