Morphology: The algae consists of thin unbranched filaments composed of cylindrical cells containing one or more spiral green chloroplast, from which the genus is named.
Reproduction: Spirogyra reproduces sexually, asexually, and vegetatively. Vegetative reproduction is mainly by fragmentation.
Spirogyra has a haplontic life cycle, which means that the dominant stage is a free-living haploid (n) gametophyte, while the sporophyte is represented only by the diploid zygote (2n).
