Question

The enzymes which have control sites, as well as active sites, are known as?

Solution

Allosteric enzymes:

  1. The allosteric enzymes apart from having an active site also have an additional site for binding the effector molecule which can be a control site or an active site.
  2. These are a type of regulatory enzyme that is regulated by nothing but the reversible and non-covalent binding of regulatory molecules to the enzyme.
  3. These regulatory molecules are called the allosteric modulators or the allosteric effectors.
  4. The conformational changes induced by these modulators can produce a more active or less active form of the enzyme.
