Question

Under what circumstances lactate fermentation is experienced?

Open in App
Solution

Lactate fermentation:

  1. Lactic acid fermentation is a metabolic process that converts glucose or other six-carbon sugars (as well as disaccharides of six-carbon sugars, such as sucrose or lactose) into cellular energy, and lactate is a metabolite that is the lactic acid in solution. It is an anaerobic process.
  2. It occurs when the ATP is produced in absence of oxygen.
  3. If there isn't enough oxygen for aerobic respiration to take place, pyruvate will ferment into lactic acid.
  4. Lactate fermentation can occur in some organisms, such as bacteria, and also in our muscle cells.
  5. Two pyruvates are transformed into two lactic acid molecules, which ionize and create lactate.
