Question

What 3 factors can make diffusion faster?

Open in App
Solution

Diffusion: It is the movement of any substance from its higher concentration to its lower concentration by the random movement of ions or molecules of the substance. Factors affecting its rate are as follows:

  1. Concentration gradient: The difference in concentration gradient is increased, thus the rate of diffusion gets faster.
  2. Distance b/w two regions: The distance b/w the two regions is increased thus the rate of diffusion gets faster.
  3. Area of the diffusion: The area over diffusion occurs is also increased thus the rate of diffusion gets faster.
  4. Size of the molecules: Small size molecules, thus rate of diffusion increases.
  5. Solubility: molecules are generally fat-soluble, increasing diffusion rate.
  6. Pores in the membrane: the size of the pores in the cell membrane is larger, and thus rate of diffusion faster.
