  2. Streptococcus pneumoniae is found in the respiratory tract, sinuses, and nasal cavity in humans.
  3. However, the bacterium may become pathogenic due to a weak immune system and spread diseases.
  4. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the main cause of community-acquired pneumonia and meningitis in children and the elderly.
  5. The organism also causes many types of pneumococcal infections other than pneumonia like bronchitis, acute sinusitis, conjunctivitis, meningitis, etc.

Pneumococcal disease:-

  1. Pneumococcal disease is caused by bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae.
  2. People with the pneumococcal disease can spread the bacteria to others when they cough or sneeze.
  3. Pneumococcus bacteria can cause infections in many parts of the body including lungs, ears, and brain, etc.
  4. Major symptoms include fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, ear pain, stiff neck, and many more.
