Question

What are the 3 types of point mutations?

Open in App
Solution

Point mutations:

  1. The point in the genome changes when a single base pair is added, deleted or changed.
  2. While most point mutations are benign, they can also bring a variety of functional outcomes, including a change in gene expression or a change in the encoded protein.

Types of point mutations:

Silent change:

  1. Substitutes cannot replace the amino acids for which the codon codes.
  2. For example, AAA (amino acid lysine, which codes for Lys) is being converted to AAG (which also codes for Lys).

Misunderstanding:

  1. The substitute replaces the codon so that it corresponds to a different amino acid.
  2. An example of a misunderstanding point mutation is sickle cell anemia.

Nonsense:

  1. The substitute modifies the codon so that it indicates the initial stop of the translation.
  2. For example, Cystic fibrosis, Beta-thalassemia, and Hurler syndrome.
