Open in App
Solution

Epithelial tissue:

  1. Epithelial tissue is widespread throughout the body.
  2. They cover all surfaces of the body, line body cavities, and hollow organs, and are the main tissue in the glands.
  3. The four major classes of simple epithelium are:
    1. Simple squamous
    2. Simple cuboidal
    3. Simple columnar
    4. Pseudostratified

Functions of epithelial tissue:

  1. Body surface cells form the outer layer of the skin. These cells protect the underlying cells from injury, chemical effects, and drying.
  2. Inside the body, epithelial cells and the elemental canal protect these organs from the lining of the mouth.
  3. Some epithelial tissues perform secretory functions. They secrete various substances like sweat, saliva [mucus], enzymes, etc.
  4. These cells protect the body from viral or bacterial infections.
  5. Some epithelial tissues help remove waste products.
  6. Epithelial tissues mainly help in the absorption of water as well as nutrients.
