Binomial nomenclature:

  1. It was first proposed by Carolus Linnaeus.
  2. It gives scientific names to plants and animals.
  3. According to this system, each animal or plant has a generic name followed by the name of the species.
  4. The generic name is written in capital letters and the species name in small letters.
  5. Both generic and species names are written in italics.
  6. The name of the person who assigned the name of the species is written at the end.
  7. There cannot be two same generic names in any kingdom.
  8. The scientific names are usually in the Latin language and names that are taken from other languages are Latinized.
  9. Generic names, as well as common names, can be the same for any organism.
  10. Homo sapiens is the scientific name for the human species.
