Connective tissues:

  1. These tissues bind and support the other tissues of the body.
  2. They form about 30% of the body weight.
  3. They are derived from embryonic mesoderm.
  4. They are formed of three components namely- cells, matrix, and fibers.

Functions of connective tissue:

  1. They attach different structures of the body to one another.
  2. They provide support to cartilages and bones in the body.
  3. Adipose connective tissue stores fat.
  4. Fluid connective tissues like blood and lymph transport food, gases, hormones, wastes, etc. from one part of the body to another.
  5. Some of these such as lymphocytes also provide protection against pathogens and infections.
  6. They act like a cushion protecting kidneys, ovaries, and eyeballs.
  7. Collagen helps in repairing the injured tissues.
