Glucose oxidation: The breakdown of glucose in the presence of oxygen is termed glucose oxidation. In the presence of oxygen, it is termed aerobic oxidation while in the absence of oxygen, it is known as anaerobic oxidation.

The products of each type of glucose oxidation are as follows:

  1. Aerobic oxidation: Glucose undergoes complete oxidation to form carbon dioxide, water, and 38 moles of energy.
  2. Anaerobic oxidation: Glucose undergoes partial oxidation to form ethanol in plants and lactic acid in animals, accompanied by carbon dioxide and 2 moles of energy.
