Question

What are the substrates of hexokinase?

Open in App
Solution

Glycolysis:

  1. Glycolysis is an enzyme-mediated multi-step process, where glucose is partially oxidized to two molecules of pyruvate. It occurs in the cytoplasm.
  2. It is the first step in cellular respiration.
  3. The first step in process of glycolysis is the conversion of D-glucose into glucose-6-phosphate.
  4. The step is catalyzed by the enzyme hexokinase.
  5. The glucose ring is phosphorylated here. Phosphorylation is adding of a phosphate group to a molecule derived from ATP(Adenosine Triphosphate).
  6. This step is energy-consuming, hence requires one molecule of ATP.

Thus, hexokinase is an enzyme whose substrate is a hexose sugar molecule (glucose).
