Question

What are the Two Phases of Glycolysis Called?

Open in App
Solution

Glycolysis:

  1. Glycolysis is the series of reactions by which glucose is broken down in the absence of oxygen to form pyruvic acid.
  2. In this process, one glucose molecule breaks down to form two molecules of pyruvate.
  3. This process takes place inside the cytoplasm of living organisms
  4. It takes in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.

The two different stages of glycolysis are the energy investment stage and the energy generation stage.

  1. The first stage of the glycolytic pathway (energy investment stage) involves the trapping of glucose molecules into the cell. Here, energy is used to change the energy so that the 6-carbon sugar molecule is evenly divided into two 3-carbon molecules.
  2. In the second stage of glycolysis (energy generation stage), energy is extracted from the molecule and stored in the form of NADH and ATP.
