Metagenesis

  1. It refers to the alternation between the sexual and asexual stages.
  2. For example, cnidarians such as Obelia are present in both polyp and medusa forms and exhibit alternation of generations.

Two Stages of metagenesis :

  1. Polyps: It is the tubular and sessile stage of cnidarians which can reproduce sexually and asexually to give both polyps and medusa.
  2. Medusa: It is the bell-shaped and mobile stage of cnidarians which can reproduce sexually to give rise to medusa only.
