Adrenal gland:

  1. These endocrine glands are located above each kidney.
  2. These glands perform various functions inside the human body by releasing hormones.
  3. Their major functions include the maintenance of the body's fluid metabolism as well as the stress response.

The adrenal gland consists of two types of tissues:

Adrenal medulla:

  1. The inner part of the adrenal gland that is located inside the center of the cortex.
  2. It secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine hormones.

Adrenal cortex :

  1. The outer part of the adrenal gland that secretes steroid hormones.
  2. It is composed of three structurally distinct concentric zones, when seen from the outside, they are zona glomerulosa, zona fasciculata, and zona reticularis.
  3. Zona glomerulosa secretes aldosterone hormone.
  4. Zona fasciculata, and reticularis secrete cortisol and androgen hormones.
