What are the two ways bacteria can acquire antibiotic resistance?

Open in App
Solution

Antibiotic resistance:

  1. The mechanism of protection by bacteria can grow even in presence of antibiotics.
  2. The bacteria develop the ability to protect themselves from the drugs which kill them(antibiotics) and this is called antibiotic resistance.

Two ways the bacteria can acquire antibiotic resistance:

  1. Mutations: The bacteria can acquire resistance to antibiotics by undergoing certain mutations during Cell division.
  2. Gene transfer: The resistant gene to specific antibiotics is transferred via horizontal gene transfer to the bacterial genome to make bacteria resistant to antibiotics.
