Stimulus:

  1. Any alteration in the resting state of an individual that evokes a physiological, biochemical, or anatomical response is called a stimulus.
  2. Stimuli are the factor of a thing or event that evokes a specific functional reaction in an organ or tissue.

Stress response:

  1. The response or immediate reaction exhibited by the body to certain factors such as physical, chemical, social, etc.
  2. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) regulates the response to stress.

Types of stimuli which can induce a stress response:

  1. Chemical: acid-base imbalance, decreased oxygen supply this varies the chemical reactions in the body.
  2. Physical: intense cold or heat, surgery, trauma, restraining the person.
  3. Emotional or psychological: fear, anxiety, sorrow.
  4. Physiological: pain, heavy exercise, hemorrhagic shock.
  5. Social: changes in lifestyle, personal conflicts.
