Acne:
Acne is a common skin condition that happens when hair follicles under the skin become clogged.
- Hair follicles are tiny holes in the skin from which an individual hair grows.
- Acne occurs when sebaceous glands found near the surface of skin produce excess sebum.
- Sebum is an oily substance that lubricates hair and skin to stop drying it.
- The excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells and forms a clog in the follicle.
- Teenage acne is formed due to increased levels of a hormone called testosterone at puberty.
- An increased level of testosterone stimulates the sebaceous gland to produce excess sebum.
