Question

What do alien species do to harm the ecosystem?

Open in App
Solution

Ecosystem: It is defined as a biological system that includes all living species (plants and animals) as well as non-living elements with which the organisms interact.

Alien species: These are the species of plants, animals, or microorganisms that do not naturally belong to a particular ecosystem but invade it.

  1. Alien species can become invasive and cause the native population to decline or become extinct, thus negatively impacting the ecosystem.
  2. One of the biggest drivers of biodiversity loss and ecosystem disruption is the invasion by alien species.
  3. An example of alien species invasion includes the Killer Algae (Caulerpa taxifolia). The algae become overpopulated and leads to the decline in the population of other organisms present in the ecosystem.
