Question

What does the rate of osmosis and net direction depend on?

Open in App
Solution

Osmosis: It is defined as the diffusion of water (pure state) from its region of higher chemical potential/concentration to its region of lower chemical potential until equilibrium is attained via a differentially or semi-permeable membrane.

Net direction: It is the final direction in which the solvent flows.

The net direction and rate of osmosis depend on two factors that are Pressure gradient and concentration gradient.

  1. Concentration gradient: Difference of concentration between two solutions that are present on either side of the membrane.
  2. Pressure gradient: When the pressure is increased in the region of a higher concentration, it opposes the osmosis of molecules.
