  1. These are said to be agents having DNA or RNA as their genetic material.
  2. Their genetic material is enveloped inside a protein capsule called a capsid.
  3. They are highly infectious and take over the host's machinery to reproduce.

They do not contain:

  1. Any cellular structures, hence they are acellular.
  2. They do not possess any cell membrane, nucleus, or any other cell organelles unlike living cells like mitochondria, Golgi body, etc.
