What does the adrenal cortex secrete?

Open in App
Solution

Adrenal gland:

  1. Adrenal glands are tiny, triangular-shaped glands found on top of both kidneys.
  2. Adrenal glands are divided into two parts: the cortex and the medulla, which each produce a separate hormone.
  3. The adrenal cortex is the biggest and most visible component of the adrenal gland.
  4. It is separated into three zones: the zona glomerulosa, the zona fasciculata, and the zona reticularis.

Hormones secreted by adrenal cortex:

  1. Cortisol (glucocorticoid hormone) regulates the body's use of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
  2. It lowers bone formation and controls blood pressure and glucose levels.
  3. Cortisol also helps to reduce inflammation in the body.
  4. Aldosterone (mineralocorticoid hormone) controls blood pressure and pH.
  5. To maintain blood pH, the hormone modulates electrolytes such as sodium and potassium.
