  1. Bioluminescence is a fascinating natural phenomenon in which a creature generates and emits light as a result of a chemical reaction in which chemical energy is transferred into light energy.
  2. A chemical reaction in their blazing abdomens causes the dazzle of fireflies on a sunny night.
  3. Bioluminescence is caused by a chemoluminescence reaction catalysed by the enzyme luciferase, which catalyses the pigment luciferin.
  4. The majority of reactions use energy.
  5. The reaction might occur within or outside of the cell.
  6. Many species produce luciferase, which aids in the rate of reaction.
  7. Some species use luciferin to bind oxygen in a photoprotein.
  8. It illuminates when an ion is present.

Example: jellyfish, starfish, squids, etc. exhibit bioluminescence.
