Question

What does the Endoplasmic Reticulum divide?

Open in App
Solution

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER):

  1. It's an organelle that produces proteins and lipids for the rest of the cell to function.
  2. The rough ER is responsible for the synthesis of proteins since it is studded by ribosomes (the protein synthesis machinery of the cell).
  3. The smooth ER is devoid of ribosomes and hence is responsible for lipid synthesis.
  4. The ER is also responsible for calcium storage and lipid metabolism
  5. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) divides the intracellular spaces into different compartments – extraluminal and luminal compartments.
